D.J. Wilcox Preserve
This preserve is a one-mile self-guided interpretive trail that winds along the Indian River Lagoon. There is a short, but scenic, boardwalk at the start of the trail followed by habitats of flatwoods, mangrove swamp, hammock and bay-gall swamp. Be on the lookout for alligators, otters and wading birds.
FAU Harbor Branch Ocean Discovery Visitors Center

FAU Harbor Branch is a world-class research organization with a goal of Ocean Science for a Better World®. Explore the exhibits and aquariums at the Ocean Discovery Visitors Center to learn about the important research conducted at FAU Harbor Branch as well as the marine environments and species that are studied. Then, visit the gift shop to sign up for a specialty tour or purchase an ocean-themed and eco-friendly gift!

Heathcote Botanical Gardens
Heathcote Botanical Gardens, located in Fort Pierce, Florida, is a five-acre gem known as the "Green Heart of the Treasure Coast." Established in 1986, it features various themed gardens, including a Japanese garden, a reflection garden, and the largest public display of tropical bonsai in the U.S. The historic Heathcote House, built around 1922, adds charm to the gardens, which also serve as an educational hub offering tours, workshops, and events like the annual Fall Garden Festival and Garden of Lights. McCarty Ranch Preserve is excellent for enjoying activities on both land and water. There are many trails for visitors to hike, bike or even horseback ride. The lake system covers more than 300 acres which provides opportunities for fishing, canoeing and kayaking. You can even camp under the stars in this primitive and rustic setting. Two self-guiding interpretive trails cover this expansive, 97-acre preserve. One loop trail describes the site of the 1891 pioneer settlement and cemetery along the banks of the St. Lucie River, while another describes the significance of an early Native American mound and historic uses of native plants found along the trail. Visitors love to explore this preserve for the views, exercise and the history.
